Is Flat-pack stress is setting in?

Are you looking at a flat-pack you’ve had delivered, wondering how easy it will be to build? Or have you begun putting it together, but the pieces are not fitting together the way they should?

Is Flat-pack assembly challenging your relationships?

Fair warning: if you are assembling a flat-pack with your spouse or partner, there are flash points that provoke arguments. According to psychologists, it starts in the showroom, followed by a power struggle at the unpacking phase.

A US clinical psychologist, Dr Ramani Durvasula, became concerned about how often flat-pack assembly arguments were mentioned during couples’ therapy. This prompted her to do some research.

According to Dr Durvasula, the first flash-point occurred at the ‘unboxing’ phase, when the couple competed to be leader.

Instructions were frequently confusing and during assembly, fault finding with each other was most likely to erupt.

When referring again to seemingly simple instructions, pieces could be missing or the couples discovered they did not have the right tools for the job.

Expectations of getting the job done smoothly and without fuss are quickly dashed where egos take a hit and couples start arguing.

At this point, negative opinions of each other were taken on and the experience was imprinted on the brain as unpleasant.

To avoid disappointing results, heated arguments and a deflated ego, hire a flat-pack assembly handyman.

After your new acquisition is successfully assembled, you may wonder about who invented the flat-pack in the first place?

Going back to the origin of the first flat-pack we pay homage to an American: the late Eerie J. Sauder who passed away aged 92 in 2004.  He is recorded as “the originator of the ready-to-assemble furniture (RTA) industry… and is credited as having invented a snap-together table that eventually revolutionised how millions of people would buy furniture”.

Sauder’s concept was mirrored in Sweden in 1956 when IKEA founder, the late Ingvar Kamprad, sold his first flat-pack. Kamprad adapted the idea for flat-pack furniture when he noticed a worker unscrewing legs on a table to enable it to fit into a car. Kamprad died aged 91 in 2018.

Sauder and Kamprad’s designs first focused on functionality of design and affordability, later evolving into aesthetically pleasing, stylish pieces.

Whether we like it or not, the RTA trend is here to stay. However, no stress, give NexGen Tradies’ handyman a call; they are on hand for fast, fuss-free professional results.
